WhatsApp will soon enable a ‘Recall’ feature that lets you delete messages

We’ve all sent that message we wish we could take back, but thankfully, it looks like WhatsApp is about to deal a blow to everyone’s personal regret monster.

Recall will work on text, images and files, but there’s a catch: there’s only a five-minute window of opportunity after the send button has been pressed. Any messages older than five minutes can’t be taken back.

The Recall feature will be remotely enabled in 2.17.30+.

“This does not exclude that it will be enabled in a future update (so I wrote ‘+’). The .30 update is perfect to see enabled it,” clarified WABetaInfo.

WhatsApp has more than 1.2 billion monthly active users. Back in April, Facebook stated that WhatsApp and Messenger combined process 60 billion messages a day. It’s unclear exactly how much of that belongs to WhatsApp, but it’s probably the lion’s share. Who knows how many of those messages could do with recalling, but it’s almost certainly in the tens of thousands.
