We are living in an age of digital communication and recently, messenger apps such as WhatsApp have taken over the scene. With the app hitting 600 million active users as at August 2014, WhatsApp continues to grow in popularity with each passing day. The app gains an impressive 25 million new users each month because the number of active users was 500 million in April 2014.
WhatsApp is free messaging software that allows individuals to send images, short messages and documents to each other. In the current work of online communications, applications like WhatsApp are going to be in a huge demand.
Do Conversations need future reference?
This is a very important to ask because it determines whether we need to have backup strategies for our conversations. Sometimes it may happen that you want to go back to an earlier conversation with a friend to prove a point or relive memories of a chat that took place 5 years ago. Unfortunately, it is difficult to store such conversations because one reason or the other. For instance, you might delete conversations accidentally or intentionally only to realize later that you ought not to have deleted the conversation.
Therefore, you need a way of recovering lost information in the conversation and that is why it is becoming increasingly necessary for you to back up your data so that you can retrieve messages even if you or someone else might have deleted them. The good news is that WhatsApp has made it possible to back up data in case of data loss.
The default backup
Individuals can back up their data on their android mobile devices through the messenger’s default data backup. The conversation is stored by default in a WhatsApp folder that can be found in the device’s internal memory or in microSD. However, this data is still not safe in case anything happens to the microSD card or the software of the device. Therefore, it is important to learn how to backup and retrieve data irrespective of what happens to the software system or the hardware of the device. Here is how one can create a backup data manually:
- Go to the menu by pressing the menu button (you can find this button at the top right of the android device)
- Click settings and then go to chat settings and then select conversations.
- You will find that the data is stored as ‘msgstore.db.crypt7’ as a default in the messenger’s folder. So for easier identification of the folder, it is important that you rename the file accordingly so that it is easy for you to locate the file when you are restoring the data.
Having learnt how to backup your data, then next thing is to learn how to restore the backed up data. The first step in the process of restoring backup files is to uninstall the messenger after you have identified the right backup data to be restored. After that, you need to rename the conversation such as ‘msgstore.db.crypt7’ and reinstall the app.
