Viber security just stepped up, end-to-end encryption, hidden chat and more

Digital messaging application Viber just announced that it will provide end-to-end encryption in its app across every of its platforms (Android, iOS, Mac and PC) and its communications channels, this means that all your messages, be it voice, video call, text message, video and photo share, can now be secured. The app will also offer the ability to hide chats as well as delete messages between users, “Today we are taking another step in this direction by making your private communication even safer through end-to-end encryption, hidden chats and message deletion.” This is something similar to what Facebook’s messaging app WhatsApp implemented few weeks ago.

Also added to the list of security features is “Hidden Chats”, this allows you to hide specific chats from the main screen so no-one but the user knows they exist, hidden messages can only be revealed by entering a four-digit PIN.

This is important especially during times when you have personal chats that you wouldn’t want anyone else to see, the hidden chat feature will enable you to hide them from others.

We take our users’ security and privacy very seriously, and it’s critical to us that they feel confident and protected when using Viber

“Because of this, we have spent a long time working on this latest update to ensure that our users have the most sophisticated security available and maximum control over their communications. We will continue to make this an ongoing priority as digital communication evolves.”

According to Viber, this feature will be rolled out globally within the next two weeks. To know if you are secured, a grey padlock is noticed. Users can also manually authenticate contacts to select they are “trusted”, doing this will change the lock color to green. If a red lock is seen, this means the authentication key has a problem, this may simply mean that the user has changed his or her device, to solve this, the participant needs to be re-trusted.

To enable these security features, all a user needs to do is to update to the latest version of Viber, after that is done, they will be notified when their conversations are encrypted. Download Viber.
