How to Get Out of Annoying Group Texts in iOS 8

Anyone who’s gotten stuck in an unwanted group text knows how terrible it can be. Your phone blows up uncontrollably, and all you can do is hope the thread quiets down soon.

For the longest time, the only way to leave a group text was to block your friends, or flat-out tell them to stop texting you. Luckily, Apple’s latest mobile operating system update, iOS 8, fixed the problem. If each recipient is running iOS 8 and has iMessage turned on, you can leave the group text on your own.

Below, we walk through how to (finally) opt out of a group text on your iOS device.

To take advantage of this feature, you’ll have to download iOS 8. Go to Settings > General > Software Update on your iOS device, and follow the directions.

If your phone already has iOS 8, you can skip this step.

2. Open the group text you want to leave.

Tap on the thread you'd like to exit.

3. Select ‘Leave this Conversation.’

In the “Details” section, you can quit the thread by choosing “Leave this Conversation” in red. If that option is grayed-out (as seen above), it means someone in the group text does not have iMessage on or is running an older version of iOS. If that’s the case, you won’t be able to leave the conversation.

Here, you can also add and remove individual people from the conversation by swiping their names and tapping “Delete,” or mute notifications by enabling “Do Not Disturb.”
