FORT COVINGTON — Just call them the cardiac kids.
Chateaugay’s Shyan Peterson netted the game-winning goal with just 2:22 left in the second OT session, booting a ball from just inside the top of the 18-yard box high into the air and over of the reach of C-P goalie Kaitlynn Long. Morgan Thomas served a corner kick into the box, where the ball bounced and landed on the foot of Peterson. The CCS junior booted it well above the goal and it appeared that Long was unsure as to whether or not it would go over the top of the crossbar. Fortunately for Chateaugay, the ball landed on the line and bounced across, much to the delight of the Bulldogs, coaches Jason LaPlante and Mike Martin and the fans that endured the nearly 90 degree heat.
It was a back-and-forth contest, with both teams having solid chances throughout regulation and both overtime periods.
Thomas received a lead pass on the right wing from Alycia Cowan, dribbed down the far sideline and beat a Colton-Pierrepont defender on the baseline. Thomas sent a pass near the top of the box, where Peterson and Dumas finished off the Chateaugay rush.
The score remained that way for the remainder of the first half, throughout the entire second half and first of the two mandatory 10-minute overtime periods.
“Colton battled us as hard as anybody has this year, but this team has a lot of heart. They support and believe in each other. I don’t know what more a coach can ask for from his players,” summarized the CCS coach, who noted that this was the fourth win by his team this season with under three minutes left in a game.
“Hannah came up with some big stops in the second half to keep the game tied,” recalled LaPlante. “We held on and picked up a huge divisional win.”
“I thought both goalies did a remarkable job of keeping the other team from scoring more than what they did,” added LaPlante. “It was a great game to be part of.”
The remainder of the Section 10 girls soccer schedule was cut down drastically due to the excessive heat on Monday.
Clifton-Fine and Hermon-Dekalb have been rescheduled for Friday, Sept. 29, while the Brushton-Moira at Parishville-Hopkinton game has been rescheduled for a 10 a.m. start on Saturday, Sept. 30. As of press time, the St. Regis Falls at Madrid-Waddington contest had not yet been rescheduled.
