How to Fix ‘Skype has Stopped Working’ Error

Skype is the most popular application software used for chatting, video and audio calling. Using this application, you can send your friends instant messages. You can  exchange files and images and create conference calls. However, sometimes we are facing with the “Skype has stopped working” Windows error.

There are different ways to fix the “ Skype has stopped working ” problem. Below, there are described some fixing tips that can help you solve your issues. So, let’s review four different methods that were successfully applied in many similar situations.

Method 1

  1. Right click on the Start tab;
  2. Left click on the “Start Task Manager” feature;
  3. Select the “Skype.exe” process, found in the “Image Name” column;
  4. Left click on the “End Process” button, to kill the Skype processes;
  5. Left click on the Start button, found in the lower-left side of the screen;
  6. In the “Search” window, type the “run” message, without quotes;
  7. In the “Open” window, type the “%appdata%” message, without quotes. Press the “Enter” key;
  8. A “Windows File Explorer” window will pop up. Locate the folder named “Skype”;
  9. Rename this folder. Right click on the folder and select the “Rename” feature. For example, rename the “Skype” folder with “Skype_old”;
  10. Left click again on the Start button;
  11. In the “Search” window, type the “run” message, without quotes;
  12. In the “Open” window, type the “%temp%\skype” message, without quotes. Press the “Enter” key;
  13. A new window will pop up. Delete the “DbTemp” folder;
  14. Restart your Skype application.

Method 2

  1. Left click on the Start button, found in the lower-left side of the desktop;
  2. In the “Search ” window type the following message: “C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\CoProcManager” without quotes. Note: If you receive an error window, such as “ Windows cannot find ‘C:\Program’… ”, then this fixing method is not suitable for you.   3. If the Windows Explorer pops up, search the “nvdxgiwrap.dll” file;
  4. Rename the “nvdxgiwrap.dll”. To do that, right click on the file and select the “Rename” feature ( for example, you can rename the “nvdxgiwrap.dll” to “Old_nvdxgiwrap.dll”);
  5. Re-launch the Skype application and check if your problems disappeared.

Method 3

  1. Right click on the Skype icon in the System tray ( in the lower-right corner of the screen);
  2. Left click on the “Quit” feature;
  3. Left click on the Start button, found in the lower-left side of the desktop;
  4. In the “Search” window, type the “run” message, without quotes;
  5. In the “Open” window, type the “%appdata%\skype ” message, without quotes. Press the “Enter” key;
  6. Search and delete the “shared.xml” file;
  7. Restart your computer;
  8. After restart, your Skype application will run properly.

Method 4

The following steps will guide you through the process of uninstalling the Skype application( the complete and correct way to do this). After that you should reinstall Skype. This will help you solve the “Skype has stopped working” issue.

1.Close your Skype application:

  • Right click on the Skype icon in the System tray ( in the lower-right corner of the screen);
  • Left click on the “Quit” feature;
  • Press the “Ctr + Alt +Delete” key combination;
  • Left click on the “Start Task Manager” feature;
  • Left click on the “Processes” tab;
  • In the “Image name” column, search for any entry beginning with the word “Skype”;
  • Left click on the entry beginning with “Skype” and click the “End Task” button;
  • A “Windows Task Manager” window will pop up. Click on the “End process” button;

2.Uninstall your Skype application:

  • Left click on the Start button, found in the lower-left side of the desktop;
  • In the “Search” window, type the “run” message, without quotes;
  • In the “Open” window, type the “appwiz.cpl” message, without quotes. Press the “Enter” key;
  • The “Program and features” window will open. Right click on the “Skype” icon and select the “Uninstall” feature;
  • You need to click again on the Start button;
  • In the “Search” window, type again the “run” message;
  • In the “Open” window, type the “%appdata%” message, without quotes. Press the “Enter” key;
  • Rename the “Skype” folder. For example, rename it to “Skype_old”;

3.Install a fresh new copy of the Skype application:
